Wow! I posted a picture of a deer silhouette I made on Instagram and had a bazillion requests for a how to (ok, maybe not a bazillion, but there were A LOT). Deer heads are pretty popular y’all!

So here is my easy peasy “how to” so you can make your own deer head. Really, its SUPER easy!

An old board, I use reclaimed perfectly imperfect boards (or a new board works)

Miss Mustard Seed’s Curio Milk Paint (or any stain you might have on hand)

Sand Paper – fine sand paper 400-Grit (what I use)

Printer

a piece of chalk

Silhouette Paint

Pen

Paintbrush

Hemp Oil and rag

Color

Here’s how to paint your deer silhouette

So easy

Stain your board with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. No smell, no mess, just mix your milk paint thin, I use a 3 parts water to 1 part paint mix. Paint your board and wipe off, just like stain. Phew. That was hard. (no, not at all, I’m kidding, it’s so easy like easy easy) No smell..you will never use the stinky stuff again!

It will dry super duper super quick!

Next Step: Print out this deer silhouette

I used this one.

Now take the white chalk and rub it all over the back side of the picture. I know. Weird, just do it.

Now place you deer head on the board and use a ball point pen to trace the outline.

When you lift off your picture you will have a chalk outline left.

Silhouette Painting

Now take a small paint brush and paint in the area. I don’t have a picture of this step for this one but it’s easy. Like. Easy. Peasy.

(this particular deer head is on reclaimed board and has a hole in its throat, poor thing, I snapped this from one that I made at the shop at a later date to show you this step, its not the same as the finished one, no actual deer were shot in the making of this how to)

Once the paint dries, sand a little to distress and smooth, then use hemp oil to make the whole thing come alive.

Add a hanger on the back and voila.

You are done my friend. Easy. Peasy. Told ya.

Now take a picture and send it to me, would love to see your finished project. Your friends will all be jealous at your awesomeness. They will. It’s true.

Enjoy your deer head!

Thanks for stopping in, hope you are having a great December!

BorisFX has launched Silhouette Paint, a new retouching and rig removal plugin for compositing and editing applications based on Silhouette, its standalone rotoscopting software.

The new plugin makes paint and planar tracking features from Silhouette available inside After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Flame, Fusion, Nuke and Premiere Pro.

Updated 21 April 2020: BorisFX has also now released Silhouette 2020.5, the latest version of Silhouette itself, bundling in the Silhoutte Paint plugin, and adding support for VFX Reference Platform 2020.

A cut-down integrated version of Silhouette focused on paint and touch-up work
Silhouette Paint makes a subset of Silhouette’s functionality available natively inside other applications, enabling editors and compositors to perform touch-up work without leaving their primary software.

As well as Silhouette’s 32-bit paint system – the plugin includes 16 paint and cloning tools, and the Auto Paint system for recording and selectively undoing raster paint strokes – that means planar tracking.

As with Silhouette 2020, the core technology from Mocha Pro, the firm’s standalone camera tracking software, is integrated into the plugin.

The plugin supports OpenColorIO colour management and the same movie file formats as its host apps.

However, unlike the standalone edition of Silhouette, users can’t export tracking or roto data; and the plugin doesn’t include Silhouette’s advanced roto, compositing or effects toolsets.

Promoting Silhouette’s tools to a wider user base at a ‘wallet-friendly’ price
In its news release, BorisFX describes Silhouette Paint as introducing Silhouette – which it acquired from its original developer last year – to a new generation of users.

As well as making the tools accessible to editors and compositors as well as specialist roto artists, the firm is targeting YouTube and Instagram content creators though its “wallet-friendly” price.

Depending on which host applications you need, the plugin is between 20 and 60% of the price of Silhouette itself: $195/year to $595/year, as opposed to $995/year.

However, unlike Silhouette, it’s only available as an annual subscription: there are no perpetual licences.

Pricing and system requirements.
Silhouette Paint is available for Adobe’s After Effects and Premiere Pro 2020, Foundry’s Nuke, Blackmagic Design’s Resolve and Fusion and Autodesk’s Flame, running on 64-bit Windows 7+, Linux and macOS 10.12+.

It’s rental-only, with subscriptions costing $195/year for Adobe tools, $395/year for OFX applications, and $595/year for both. A bundle deal with Mocha Pro is also available.

Registered users of Silhouette 2020 get the multi-host version of Silhouette Paint for free, and the plugin will also be included free with new purchases of Silhouette.
