XRevert FAQs

The app ran, but I do not see any changes.
You need to restart your Mac when XRevert is done, and it should prompt you to do so. If you have rebooted and still do not see any changes, first try launching XRevert again, choosing 'Apply More Changes,' and then selecting the same options as you did the first time. If that does not work, open your Applications folder and pick an app that's included with macOS. Right click on it and choose Get Info. If the smaller icon in the upper left looks different than the big one shown in the 'Preview' section, then XRevert completed making the changes, but the icon cache did not get cleared. Open a Terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type: find /private/var/folders -name com.apple.iconservices.Then typermfollowed by a space, then the file path that the first command returned. Repeat the above, but instead ofcom.apple.iconservices, use com.apple.dock.iconcache. Restart your Mac, and the icons should now be replaced.
Can I undo the changes that XRevert makes?
Yes. The first time you run the app, it will automatically make its changes with your approval. When you run the app again, it will tell you that the icons have already been replaced, and give you a few options. One of these is to 'restore,' which will return macOS's appearance to the way it was before running XRevert. This requires XRevert (formerly YosemiteRevert) 1.2 or later.
XRevert needs to download a 'patch file' - what does that mean?
Users running macOS 10.12.1 or 10.12.2 may see this message. There's a macOS bug that affects these versions which prevents XRevert from launching after your Mac is restarted, after XRevert has been run once. This file is a workaround which allows it to run even after restarting.
I'm running the app for the first time, but it tells me it's already been run.
This happens on occasion. In the event that this happens to you, select Finder, press Command + Shift + G, and type in ~/Library/Preferences. Find and move 'YR_Done.txt' to the trash. You could also click 'Restore' when running XRevert, and then run it again after rebooting instead.
After XRevert changed the system font, some characters look weird when I type them.
You are probably running an older version of XRevert. Font changes were initially introduced in version 1.1. They were later removed due to this issue, and re-introduced in version 1.3. Version 1.3.1 fixed an issue where changes made by an earlier version of the app were not overridden. If you have at least version 1.3.1, there should be no issues. There is also a separate issue where strange text may appear on the login screen after undoing XRevert's changes. XRevert clears the font cache, and macOS will rebuild the cache the next time you log in. Therefore you should only notice this the first time you log in, as the cache hasn't been rebuilt yet.
Can I choose to apply some changes, but not others?
Yes. XRevert will ask you which changes you want to apply. Click 'All' to apply all of them, or click on the individual options that you want. Press Command while clicking to select multiple options. This requires a minimum of version 1.5.
Will XRevert also change the overall UI, i.e. window backgrounds and button textures?
Yes, if you have XRevert 2.0 or later. Make sure you include 'Aesthetics' when XRevert asks you which changes you would like to make.
